James F Stubbins is the Donald Biggar Willett Professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma & Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), part of The Grainger College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Cincinnati (1975), an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the same institution (1972), and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan (1970). His academic roles include Department Head from 1999 to 2017 and Adjunct Professorships at Ohio University (1991–1998).
Research focuses on nuclear materials, irradiation damage, energy systems, and advanced materials for nuclear applications. Notable consulting includes collaborations with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. He has led projects on materials corrosion in molten lead-bismuth eutectic systems and radiation effects in reactor components.
Professional recognition includes Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (2007), the Arthur Holly Compton Award in Education (2018), and the Landis Public Communication Award (2018). His service spans campus committees, federal advisory roles, and leadership in academic organizations like NEDHO. Recent teaching includes courses on energy systems, nuclear materials, and design in nuclear engineering.
