James E. Baldwin is an Assistant Professor of Islamic History at the University of Warwick's Department of History. His research focuses on the legal, social, and political dynamics of the Ottoman Empire, particularly in Egypt. He holds a PhD from New York University (2003-2010) and has held prestigious fellowships including the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships (Warwick 2013–2014; Queen Mary 2011–2013). His work examines the interplay between law, power, and governance in Ottoman contexts, with ongoing projects on dispute resolution in Cairo and elite conflicts over land and authority in eighteenth-century Egypt.
Teaching includes undergraduate modules on Ottoman history, Islamic legal systems, and global history methodologies, as well as MA courses on historical theory and methods. His publications explore topics such as Islamic legal practices, petition systems, and urban political dynamics in Ottoman provinces. Recent work emphasizes how legal frameworks connected local Egyptian realities with imperial structures in Istanbul.
Baldwin has contributed to public discourse through writings like his 2013 Guardian article analyzing political developments in Egypt and Turkey. His current monograph project investigates legal mechanisms linking Cairo to the Ottoman center, while a forthcoming book chapter examines litigation and violence in Cairo’s eighteenth-century urban landscape.
