James Dear is a Professor and Personal Chair of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Edinburgh's Deanery of Clinical Sciences, within the Centre for Cardiovascular Science. He holds a BMBS from the University of Oxford (1999) and a PhD in Pharmacology from University College London (1996). His research focuses on improving patient safety through biomarker development for drug-induced organ injury, particularly paracetamol overdose, and advancing treatments like macrophage therapy for acute liver failure. He has pioneered shorter acetylcysteine treatment protocols now used nationwide and collaborates with pharmaceutical industries for commercial translation.
Key achievements include:
- Developed diagnostic biomarkers for paracetamol toxicity affecting 100,000+ annual cases in the UK
- Principal Investigator for major trials like HiSNAP and MAIL
