James D. Sargent is Professor of Pediatrics, Biomedical Data Science, and Community and Family Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. He holds the Scott M. and Lisa G. Stuart Professorship and serves as Scott M. and Lisa G. Stuart Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. His work spans multiple departments and programs including the Children's Hospital At Dartmouth, Dartmouth Cancer Center, Quantitative Biomedical Sciences, and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.
Dr. Sargent received his MD from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1984 and BS from the University of Oregon in 1979. His research focuses on understanding how media and marketing influence adolescent health behaviors, with over 20 years of population-based studies examining substance use, aggression, violence, and risky sexual practices. His translational work aims to develop interventions and influence policies to reduce harmful media exposures during childhood and adolescence.
Analysis of Dr. Sargent's recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a concentrated focus on tobacco research, particularly examining long-term health consequences of smoking, COPD development, and e-cigarette impacts. His work heavily utilizes national datasets like the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study and National Health Interview Survey, with significant attention to rural-urban health disparities in tobacco use patterns and regulations.
