James D. Lowenthal is the Mary Elizabeth Moses Professor of Astronomy at Smith College, where he focuses on high-redshift galaxies, Lyman break galaxies, starburst galaxies, and millimeter/submillimeter galaxies. His research spans galaxy formation and evolution, QSO absorption line systems, and ultra-faint radio sources.
His recent publications, including studies on submillimeter galaxy X-ray emissions, redshift distributions, and Lyman break galaxy dynamics, emphasize observational cosmology and galaxy evolution. He also engages Smith students in exoplanet research using the college’s 16" telescope.
Lowenthal earned his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and a B.S. from Yale College. He utilizes major telescopes like Keck, Hubble, Spitzer, and the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) for his research.
