James D. Kelly

James D. Kelly is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU), with a 40-year career in dry bean breeding and genetics. His work focuses on developing high-yielding, disease-resistant bean cultivars using molecular markers and international collaborations through the Legume Innovation Lab. He has trained numerous graduate students, including global researchers like Rwanda's Minister of Agriculture Gerardine Mukeshimana.

His research spans symbiotic nitrogen fixation, drought tolerance, canning quality, and disease resistance in Phaseolus vulgaris. Recent publications highlight QTL mapping, transcriptome analysis, and cultivar registrations like 'Cayenne' and 'Red Cedar'.
