James D. Fix

James D. Fix is the Richard E. Crandall Professor of Computer Science at Reed College. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on theoretical computer science with practical implementations, particularly in algorithm design, parallel computation, and data structures.

Professor Fix investigates how cache performance influences algorithm efficiency and develops parallel implementations for graph search operations and large-scale text indexing systems. His work bridges theoretical computer science principles with real-world computational challenges.

He maintains active research in formal methods for verifying concurrent and distributed systems. Outside academia, he enjoys outdoor photography and documenting natural landscapes through hiking expeditions.
