James Coupe is an Affiliate Professor at the Royal College of Art and previously an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington's Department of Digital Art and Experimental Media (DXARTS). He holds a Ph.D. in Digital Art and Experimental Media from the University of Washington (2009), an M.A. in Creative Technology from the University of Salford (2000), and an M.A. in Fine Art from the University of Edinburgh (1999). His research focuses on systems, autonomy, and networks, particularly exploring surveillance, privacy, and the interplay between human behavior and technological systems.
Key projects include Surveillance Suite (supported by Creative Capital), Sanctum (a public art installation at the Henry Art Gallery), and Warriors (exhibited at the International Center of Photography). He has received awards such as the Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica and the HeK net-based award. His work often employs computer vision, real-time data streams, and interactive installations to critique societal systems and digital surveillance.
James has collaborated with institutions like ThoughtWorks Arts and the Writing Machine Collective. His art has been featured in venues including Kunstraum Kreuzberg Berlin, ZKM, and the Henry Art Gallery. His research extends to ethical considerations of observation in digital age, as seen in his participation in panels like 'Virtual Panopticons.'
