James Collins is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the College of Arts and Sciences, University at Albany, State University of New York. An anthropologist and linguist, he integrates discourse analysis with ethnographic research to examine power dynamics, identity formation, and social inequality through language practices.
His research centers on linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, with three decades of work on language diversity, ethnic identity, and literacy politics. Recent projects investigate multilingualism in globalization through comparative studies of post-apartheid South Africa and Jim Crow-era civil rights frameworks, alongside migration and language contact research in Flanders and Upstate New York healthcare settings.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Fulbright teaching/research grant for Western Cape, South Africa fieldwork (January-June 2014)
Professor Collins collaborates extensively through the International Consortium on Language and Super-diversity (InCoLaS) and maintains active research partnerships with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (MPI-MMG), Belgian institutions, and University at Albany colleagues on migration, language learning, and healthcare accessibility.
