Associate Professor James Chon is affiliated with Swinburne University of Technology’s School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies. His research focuses on optical synthesis, microscopy, and spectroscopy of single quantum objects, including plasmonic nanoparticles and semiconductor materials for nanophotonic applications. He leads the Optical Nanomaterial Spectroscopy for Photonic Application (ONSPA) group at the Optical Sciences Centre.
Dr. Chon’s professional memberships include the Australian Institute of Physics, Australian Optical Society, and American Chemical Society. His recent grants include projects on nanoparticle quantification in glass products (2021), phase-change media development (2008–2010), and multi-dimensional optical data storage (2005–2011).
His research trends emphasize nanoparticle-cell interactions, high-order image correlation spectroscopy, and multiphoton luminescence in silicon nanoparticles. Notable awards include his past ARC Future Fellowship.
He supervises HDR students on topics such as silicon nanocrystals for biomedical imaging, gold nanoparticle cellular uptake, and laser patterning of silicon surfaces. His work bridges nanotechnology with biomedical and optical engineering applications.
