James Childress

James Childress is a Research Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), focusing on the biology of deep-sea organisms and hydrothermal vent ecosystems. His work examines physiological adaptations of animals in extreme environments, particularly chemoautotrophic symbioses and hydrothermal vent biota. Since the 1970s, Childress has pioneered studies on metabolic interactions between hosts and symbionts, sulfide utilization, and thermal tolerance limits.
