James C.Y. Watt is a Senior Fellow and currently serves as the Brooke Russell Astor Chairman of the Department of Asian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Previously, he held positions as Director of the University Art Museum at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1971–80) and Curator of Asiatic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1981–85).
His education includes studies at the University of Oxford and the University of Hong Kong.
Watt's research centers on Chinese art history with deep specialization in cultural and artistic exchanges between China and Central Asia over the past two decades. His work spans the full spectrum of Chinese artistic traditions, emphasizing the Silk Road's role in cross-cultural transmission. Major exhibitions he curated—including When Silk Was Gold (1997), China: Dawn of a Golden Age (2004), and The World of Khubilai Khan (2010)—demonstrate expertise in Tang and Yuan dynasty artistry, highlighting Buddhist, Islamic, and steppe cultural syntheses under imperial patronage.
His publication trends reveal consistent focus on intercultural dynamics from the 7th to 14th centuries, particularly Silk Road material exchanges, religious influences on artistic production, and the political dimensions of Yuan dynasty cosmopolitanism.
