James Bonk is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chinese Studies, East Asian Studies, and History at the College of Wooster. He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University (2014), an M.A. from McGill University (2006), and a B.A. from McGill University (2002).
His research examines the social and cultural history of war in 18th-19th century China, focusing on war commemoration, gendered experiences of conflict, and the cultural worlds of Qing-era military personnel. He explores themes such as manifest loyalty shrines, military patronage networks, and the subaltern perspectives of Han Chinese soldiers and families within imperial frameworks.
Bonk has published in journals like Journal of Chinese Military History and Late Imperial China, with work analyzing the Ningshan Mutiny, Green Standards military networks, and Qing imperial commemoration practices. His courses cover East Asian studies, war and culture in China, Chinese philosophy, and historical methodologies.
Professional affiliations include the Association for Asian Studies, Chinese Military History Society, and American Historical Association.
