Dr. James Abelson is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he serves as Director Emeritus of the Anxiety Disorders Program. With dual training in medicine (M.D., University of Michigan, 1984) and clinical psychology (Ph.D., Michigan State University, 1980), his career spans nearly four decades of research and clinical leadership in anxiety disorders.
Dr. Abelson's research focuses on the neurobiological mechanisms of anxiety disorders, particularly OCD and generalized anxiety disorder. His work investigates cortisol responses, brain network connectivity, and the integration of psychological and pharmacological treatments. Recent studies explore innovative approaches like morning light therapy for traumatic stress and neural biomarkers to predict treatment response. The breadth of his research spans from basic neuroendocrine mechanisms to implementation science in school settings.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on treatment mechanisms, with particular focus on approach-avoidance conflict processing, neural circuitry changes following treatment, and biomarkers for personalized anxiety treatment. His work increasingly incorporates cross-disciplinary perspectives, including cultural factors in mental health as seen in his international collaboration on racial socialization.
- Abelson/Curtis Legacy Fund established in recognition of his nearly three decades of leadership
- Extensive publication record in high-impact journals including Endocrine Reviews, Biological Psychiatry, and JAMA Psychiatry
- Multiple NIH-funded clinical trials examining innovative anxiety treatments
Dr. Abelson maintains an active research program with numerous ongoing clinical trials and collaborations. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical application, examining both traditional treatments like exposure and response prevention and novel approaches like light therapy. He has mentored numerous researchers through collaborative projects and serves as a senior investigator on multiple multi-site studies examining anxiety disorders across the lifespan.
As Director Emeritus of the Anxiety Disorders Program, Dr. Abelson continues to influence clinical programming while focusing his efforts on research that advances understanding of anxiety mechanisms and improves treatment outcomes through personalized approaches.
