James A. Ritter serves as the L. M. Weisiger Professor of Engineering and Carolina Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of South Carolina, holding these prestigious positions while actively leading research initiatives and academic administration.

Professor Ritter's research centers on adsorption-based gas separation, hydrogen storage materials, and magnetic field-enhanced processes for both industrial separations and biomedical applications. His pioneering work in cyclic adsorption processes has yielded significant advancements in gas purification technologies, while his exploration of magnetic field applications bridges chemical engineering with targeted drug delivery systems, demonstrating interdisciplinary innovation.

Beyond direct supervision, he serves on editorial boards for four major journals and consults for over 20 industry and government entities including ExxonMobil and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
