James A. Hokanson is an Assistant Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. His work focuses on neural engineering approaches to improve pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction treatment.
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering (University of Pittsburgh, 2014)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship (Duke University, 2014-2019)
- B.S. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering (Washington University in St. Louis, 2006)
Dr. Hokanson's research integrates neural engineering, electrical stimulation therapy, and machine learning for clinical diagnostics in urological disorders. His team develops state-dependent neuromodulation systems for bladder control, with a focus on pelvic floor dysfunction and autonomic nervous system interactions.
His recent publications (2024-2025) examine bladder compliance, sacral neuromodulation prediction models, and brain-bladder connectivity through advanced MRI analysis. Current projects include real-time neural decoding and adaptive stimulation algorithms for urinary disorders.
Dr. Hokanson directs the Pelvic Diagnostics & Therapeutic Laboratory (PDAT) and holds grants from the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (2025) and National Institutes of Health (2020-2023). He collaborates with the LURN Study Group on lower urinary tract dysfunction phenotyping and treatment outcome prediction.
