Professor Jameel Inal is a Visiting Professor in Biomedical Science at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Life and Medical Sciences. He leads the Biosciences Research Group and has held roles including Associate Dean for Research (2018–2020). His career spans over 35 years, with early work in microbiology, vaccinology, and immunology at institutions like Porton Down and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He discovered a complement regulatory protein receptor in Schistosoma parasites and pioneered synthetic peptide therapies for complement-mediated inflammation.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) Microbiology, King's College London (1984)
- MPhil Virology, Horticultural Research International/University of Westminster (1988)
- PhD in Vaccinology, Public Health Laboratory Service (1992)
Research focuses on extracellular vesicles (EVs) in infectious diseases and cancer. Key areas include EV roles in pathogen-host interactions (e.g., Giardia intestinalis), cancer therapy, and immunomodulation. He founded the Cellular and Molecular Immunology Research Centre (CMIRC) and co-founded the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles. Over 17 PhD students have completed under his supervision.
Awards and recognition are not explicitly listed in the provided texts.
Grants and Projects:
- "Membrane vesicle-mediated sensitization of Clostridioides difficile to phage infection" (2018–2021)
- "Investigating the viability of Outer Membrane Vesicle Inhibition in sensitizing bacteria to phage therapy" (2021–2022)
Labs/Teams: Leads the Extracellular Vesicle Research Unit at the University of Hertfordshire. Collaborates internationally on EV biology and phage therapy applications.
