Jalylah Burrell is an Assistant Professor of African American Studies at San José State University, affiliated with the College of Social Sciences Education. She earned a PhD in American Studies and African American Studies from Yale University (2017). Her research and teaching focus on African Diasporic literature, popular culture, and Black women’s contributions to the American comedic tradition. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at DePaul University’s African and Black Diaspora Department and Rice University’s Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Her current book project explores Black women’s roles in comedy through the lens of cultural and historical analysis.
