Jalil Safaei is a Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), affiliated with the Department of Economics and the interdisciplinary fields of Health Sciences and International Studies. He is currently on sabbatical but remains actively engaged in research and graduate supervision. His academic work bridges economics, public health, and social policy, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing systemic health inequities.
Dr. Safaei’s research centers on the political economy of health, social determinants of health, health inequities, welfare systems, and macroeconomic issues such as poverty and inequality. His work emphasizes how structural and policy-level factors shape population health outcomes globally. He has conducted empirical studies in both developed (OECD) and developing (e.g., Peru) contexts, contributing to debates on healthcare governance and distributive justice.
His recent publications (2015–2020) reveal a thematic focus on health policy evaluation, healthcare process improvement, and deliberative democracy in health systems. These works span disciplines including health economics, public health, political science, and ethics, demonstrating interdisciplinary rigor and policy relevance.
Dr. Safaei supervises graduate students in the PhD Health Sciences, MA Development Economics, and MA International Studies programs, and is currently accepting new advisees. His collaborative research includes co-authorship with scholars such as James Chan and Thomas Rotter on healthcare efficiency, and Claudia Vizcarra on child nutrition.
He is the author of the 2020 book The Political Economy of Health and Healthcare: Unhealthy Distribution, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, which synthesizes his critical analysis of healthcare distribution and inequality.
