Jakub Scaber is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Specialist Registrar at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences. He is a member of both the Emerging Technologies for Analysis of the Brain (ETA) Research Group and the Oxford Motor Neuron Disease Centre.

Jakub Scaber's research focuses on understanding the biological processes underlying motor neuron disease and frontotemporal dementia at cellular and molecular levels. His work leverages high-throughput sequencing technologies and computational biology to address key questions in neurodegeneration. He is particularly interested in developing tools to understand why certain cell types are affected by these conditions while others remain relatively spared. His research utilizes induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons to investigate how pathogenic genetic variants like C9orf72 and TDP-43 predispose specific cell types to motor neuron disease. He complements his cellular work with molecular analysis of post-mortem samples, believing that the synergy between these approaches yields important insights into disease pathophysiology.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on C9orf72-related mechanisms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with particular attention to cellular phenotypes, axonal transport defects, and the role of microglia in disease progression. His research spans multiple model systems including iPSC-derived neurons and examines both genetic and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration.
Jakub Scaber became a Clinical Lecturer in Oxford in 2018 and continues to contribute significantly to the field of motor neuron disease research through his work at the intersection of clinical neurology and basic science.
His laboratory and research team are part of the Oxford Motor Neuron Disease Centre, where they work on developing and applying cutting-edge technologies to understand the fundamental mechanisms of motor neuron degeneration.
