Jakub Benes is an Associate Professor at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) at University College London (UCL), holding this position since 2019. He previously taught at Oxford University and the University of Birmingham, following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Birmingham (2012–2015). Born in Oakland, California, he earned a BA in International Studies from Middlebury College and a PhD in European History from the University of California, Davis.
Research Focus: Benes specializes in European history (excluding British, classical Greek, and Roman), global and world history, and the history of ideas. His work integrates transnational and comparative perspectives, often focusing on Eastern Europe within broader historical contexts.
