Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, specializing in sound communication and behavior. He earned his PhD (1990) and Cand.Scient. (1987) from Odense University (now Syddansk Universitet). Since joining the faculty in 1999, he has supervised 10 PhD students and 20 Master's candidates, serving as educational leader at the Institute of Biology.
His research explores hearing mechanisms across species with focus areas including:
- Neurophysiology of auditory processing
- Bioacoustics and sound localization
- Evolution of hearing in reptiles and amphibians
- Biorobotic applications of biological hearing systems
Recent publications (2023-2024) demonstrate sustained focus on comparative auditory neurobiology, examining sound processing circuits in reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Work consistently integrates neuroanatomical, behavioral, and evolutionary approaches to auditory research.
He has secured significant funding including:
- Carlsberg Foundation grants (field expeditions)
- SDU 2020 grant (≈10M DKK for Biorobotics Center co-direction)
- Eurostars project (600,000 DKK)
- Oticon Foundation support for PhD training
As Co-PI for the Center for Biorobotics (2013-2019), he developed interdisciplinary collaborations across institutions including University of Maryland, Universität Oldenburg, and University of Minnesota. Maintains editorial roles for neuroscience journals and referees for PNAS, Science, and Nature Communications.
