Jake Brunkard serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his research centers on plant nutrient sensing and metabolic regulation through the TARGET OF RAPAMYCIN (TOR) signaling network.
Education:
- History and Biology, B.A. with High Honors, Swarthmore College
- Plant Biology, Ph.D., UC Berkeley
His lab investigates evolutionary and regulatory mechanisms of plant metabolism across molecular, cellular, physiological, and genomic scales, with primary focus on TOR signaling's role in coordinating growth with nutrient availability. Using multidisciplinary approaches including genetics, genomics, biochemistry, and physiology across model species (Arabidopsis, tomato, Nicotiana benthamiana, maize), the research explores conserved eukaryotic pathways with translational potential for sustainable agriculture. Long-term goals target harnessing TOR networks to enhance crop resilience and yields while reducing fertilizer dependency.
Teaching responsibilities include Plant Genetics & Development (Gen631), Domestication Genetics (Gen701), and Grant Writing for Geneticists (Gen993).
Dr. Brunkard mentors six active PhD students and collaborates with Postdoctoral Scholar Catherine Freed. His research team includes Laboratory Manager Sergio Sanchez and Undergraduate Researchers Caylynn Dedow and Lazlo Camou, operating from lab facilities at 425 Henry Mall.
The Brunkard Lab maintains active research operations with documented alumni including Postdoctoral Scholar Michael Busche and Undergraduate Researcher Leah Cytron-Walker.
