Jaime Ruiz, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the University of Florida’s Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, part of the College of Engineering. He directs the Ruiz Human-Computer Interaction Lab and previously held an Assistant Professor position at Colorado State University. His research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with emphasis on multimodal interaction, augmented reality, and health informatics. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo (2012), an MS from San Francisco State University, and a BS in Psychology from UC Davis.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, University of Waterloo (2012)
- MS in Computer Science, San Francisco State University
- BS in Psychology, University of California, Davis
Research Interests: Jaime’s work explores user-centered design in multimodal interfaces, augmented reality systems, and assistive technologies. He investigates how to enhance situational awareness through AR displays, develop usable EMG-based prosthetics, and design effective health interventions using mHealth apps. His lab also pioneers bioinformatics tools for antibiotic resistance analysis and explores embodied agents’ nonverbal communication in AR environments.
Grants & Collaborations:
- NSF CAREER: Next Generation Multimodal Interfaces ($504K)
- NIH: Evaluation of Adaptive Weight Loss Maintenance Intervention ($3M)
- DARPA: ENKIx Task Guidance in Extreme Environments ($5M)
Labs & Projects: His lab leads projects like ENKIx (AR task guidance), MyTrack+ (weight management app), and MEGARes (antibiotic resistance database). Collaborations span health sciences, robotics, and bioinformatics, emphasizing interdisciplinary impact.
