Jae Woo Lee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Columbia University, where he has been since 2008. He serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies for BA Programs and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education. His research focuses on network architecture, programmable routers, and computer science education.
- Education:
- B.A. in Physics from Columbia College (1994)
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University (2012)
Research interests include:
- NetServ: A programmable router architecture for deploying in-network services on edge routers using Java and OSGi. Demonstrated at GEC9.
- Content-Centric Networking: Projects like CCNxServ for dynamic service scalability and GRAND for named data version control.
- DHT and Multicast: Work on large-scale DHT bootstrapping and churn-immune architectures.
- Location-Based Services: Indoor localization for emergency services and population density-driven map simplification.
Publications reflect expertise in networking (Cloud Computing, NetServ, Content-Centric Networking), distributed systems (DHT, Peer-to-Peer), and CS education. Articles span 2007–2015, with recent work on container-based cloud networking and future internet architectures.
Teaching awards include:
- SEAS Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2016)
- Columbia University Presidential Teaching Award (2011)
- Andrew P. Kosoresow Memorial Award (2009)
- Gold Nugget in CULPA (2011)
- Featured in Bwog's Best Classes Ever (2012)
Teaching emphasizes hands-on learning. Courses include Advanced Systems Programming, C++ for C Programmers, Operating Systems, and Essential Data Structures. Redesigned COMS W3157 to focus on project-based learning with a capstone web server project.
