Jacqueline van Kruiningen

Dr. Jacqueline van Kruiningen serves as a Lecturer in Language-aware Higher Education at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, where she leads the Language-Aware Higher Education research group within the Knowledge Centre for Talent Development.

Her research focuses on developing knowledge about academic and subject-specific language skills of students in higher education and identifying effective approaches to support language development. With extensive experience across multiple institutions including University of Groningen, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, and Open University, she has coordinated educational innovation projects in subject-integrated communication education and conducted research at the Center for Language and Cognition.

Dr. van Kruiningen's work centers on two key principles: the connection between language and subject matter, and the importance of language awareness among lecturers and teaching teams. Her research examines students' professional and academic writing skills, writing pedagogy, and teacher professional development, with particular emphasis on how language development connects to professional competence.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in language integration research, academic writing development, and language-aware teaching methodologies. These works collectively contribute to building a shared knowledge base for language-aware higher education practices that are directly applicable to educational settings.

As co-promoter for Moniek Vis at RUG, she guides research into genre didactics and the connection between reading and writing education in secondary education. She actively collaborates with program teams and language education advisors to develop expertise in language-aware teaching, working with the Education Quality Expertise Group to build a knowledge base that is directly relevant to educational practice and unique in the Netherlands.

Dr. van Kruiningen is developing practical resources through projects like the Guidelines for Language-Aware Higher Education, which aims to create an online toolbox with implementation principles and practical resources for higher professional education teams developing language-aware curricula.
