Jacqueline Urla is a Professor and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, affiliated with the Department of Anthropology. Her research focuses on linguistic anthropology, particularly the political dimensions of minority language revitalization and resistance movements. She is renowned for her long-term ethnographic work in the Basque region, examining language activism and the cultural politics surrounding minority languages like Basque, Catalan, and Galician. Urla’s work integrates theories from Foucault, Bourdieu, and Fanon to analyze how language functions as a site of power and resistance.
Her key contributions include the book *Reclaiming Basque: Language, Nation, and Cultural Activism* (2012), which explores Basque language revival strategies. More recently, she has collaborated with European research teams studying how new speakers of minority languages are formed and how historical memory movements address Francoist repression in Spain. Her research methodologies emphasize ethnographic depth and critical engagement with quantitative metrics in assessing language vitality.
Urla’s scholarship bridges anthropology, sociology of language, and ethnic studies, addressing topics such as language policy, cultural authenticity, and the intersections of gender and ethnicity in linguistic activism. She has advised numerous collaborative projects and contributed to debates on innovative approaches to fieldwork pedagogy and decolonizing knowledge production in the social sciences.
