Dr. Ellis's research employs interdisciplinary approaches to U.S. social and cultural history, examining how popular culture, material artifacts, and texts reveal historical constructions of gender, race, ethnicity, and class. She specializes in:
- Working-class women's history and cultural studies (photography, popular culture)
- The politics of memory through archives and public history
- Girlhood studies and queer theory frameworks
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on marginalized historical narratives, particularly analyzing labor history through gender lenses and exploring methodologies of public memory. Recent work emphasizes affective dimensions of historical trauma and pedagogical approaches to industrial disasters.
