Jacopo Tomatis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities at the University of Turin, specializing in Ethnomusicology (SSD: L-ART/08). He teaches in the DAMS (Disciplines of Arts, Music, Entertainment and Digital Media) undergraduate program and the Master’s program in CAM (Cinema, Performing Arts, Music and Media), offering courses such as Fondamenti del suono e della musica and Storia e fenomenologia della popular music.
His research centers on the cultural history of Italian popular music, with a focus on canzone d'autore, folk revival movements, political music, media representation, and the ideological construction of musical genres. He explores how music interacts with identity, memory, and social change, particularly in postwar Italy.
His recent publications analyze topics such as Lucio Dalla, Nino Rota, the Nuovo Canzoniere Italiano, and the cultural meanings of rock, trap, and folk music. The articles reflect a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining musicology, cultural studies, media theory, and historical analysis, with recurring themes of authenticity, nostalgia, youth culture, and transmedia narratives.
He is involved in several research initiatives, including:
- Atlante della discografia antagonista: Italia, 1958-1980
- ECHOFRIENDLY: soundscape preservation and ecoacoustic assessment
- SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD: material culture in popular culture
Tomatis also contributes to academic governance through participation in departmental councils and course monitoring commissions. His work emphasizes archival research, historiographical methodology, and the role of music as a cultural and political force.
