Jacob Suissa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.S. in Plant Biology from the University of Vermont and a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University. His research focuses on plant evolution across deep time and under global change, particularly in ferns, integrating phylogenetic analyses with anatomical, physiological, and genomic investigations.
He runs the non-profit Let’s Botanize, promoting plant literacy to address climate and biodiversity challenges. His work explores plant morphological evolution, ecophysiological adaptations, and diversification patterns. Recent research highlights include studying fern vascular architecture, drought resilience mechanisms, and symbiotic relationships with ants.
Research Interests: Plant evolution, plant morphology, plant ecophysiology, phylogenomics, fern diversity drivers, and adaptive traits. His NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship (2022–2023) supported studies on vascular innovation and drought tolerance.
Publications highlight fern reproductive strategies, ant-plant symbiosis, and phylogenetic methods, with recent trends emphasizing functional morphology and evolutionary convergence. He actively mentors graduate students through UTK programs and collaborates internationally on fern systematics and biogeography.
