Jacob Steen Møller is a Danish academic administrator currently serving as Director of Facilities and Real Estate at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) since 2009, with previous leadership as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 2003-2009. His career spans both academic and industry sectors, including 19 years at DHI Water & Environment where he progressed to division director, and he holds a PhD in Environmental Hydraulics from DTU (1984).
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Environmental Hydraulics, Technical University of Denmark (1984)
- MSc in Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (1980)
- Basic military training, Corps of Engineers, Farum (1981)
Møller's research focuses on facilities management, civil engineering, environmental impact assessment, hydraulic engineering, and applied oceanography. His work particularly emphasizes sustainable building practices, water resource management, and strategic campus development. He has made significant contributions to major infrastructure projects including the Øresund and Great Belt Links, where he developed the 'Zero Impact Solution' guaranteeing no environmental impact on the Baltic Sea from these fixed links.
His publication trajectory shows a clear evolution from pure hydraulic engineering toward facilities management and sustainability in university operations. Early work concentrated on stratified flow and environmental hydraulics with publications like 'Mixing in stratified flow caused by obstacles' (1997), while recent publications address sustainable building practices, value analysis in facilities management, and strategic university planning as seen in 'Value adding FM in practice' (2019). This research bridges engineering science with practical applications in large-scale infrastructure and campus development.
Møller has held numerous leadership positions including Chairman of G.A. Hagemanns Kollegium (2012-date), Chairman of DTU-HF amba. (2011-date), and elected member of Realdania's Board of Representatives (2010-date). He previously served as Chairman of the Academy Council at the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (2010-2013) and has been active in various committees related to engineering, facilities management, and sustainable development.
Through his role as Manager for the International Research School in Civil Engineering at DTU and various examiner appointments at DTU and Aalborg University (1990-2003), Møller has contributed to academic mentoring. His project leadership includes significant grants for infrastructure projects like the Femern Belt Link hydrographic investigations (2007-2010) and the Nord Stream Gas Pipeline impact studies (2009-2010).
While not leading a traditional research lab, Møller has directed major research initiatives including the Realdania Centre for Facilities Management and DHI's strategic R&D projects such as Operational Water Forecasting. His work connects academic research with practical applications in civil engineering and facilities management through various institutional partnerships and international projects across multiple continents.
