Jacob Staude

Jacob Staude is a Researcher at the House of Astronomy (HdA) in Heidelberg, with a career spanning over four decades. His work bridges astronomical research, public relations, and science education initiatives.

• Doctoral student at the State Observatory (Königstuhl) starting in 1970.
• Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) since 1975, focusing on star formation until 1995.
• Editor-in-Chief (1981-2007) and Publisher (2008-2013) of the magazine Sterne und Weltraum, advancing astronomy communication.
• Founder of the educational project Science in Schools! (WIS) in 2001, linked to his outreach work.

Staude’s research initially focused on star formation and young stellar objects, particularly during his early career. Later, his contributions centered on science communication and public outreach, leveraging media and educational programs to promote astronomy. His work with Sterne und Weltraum and WIS established Germany’s premier platform for professional and amateur astronomers.

Staude received the Bruno H. Bürgel Prize (2001) for his efforts in making astronomy accessible to the public. His leadership in public relations at MPIA (1975-2009) and role in launching the House of Astronomy since 2007 further highlight his dedication to bridging academic research and societal engagement.

Staude initiated the Science in Schools! (WIS) project in 2001, fostering collaboration between schools and astronomical institutions. He played a pivotal role in developing the House of Astronomy, which integrates his work in research, publishing, and education outreach.
