Jacob Emery is a Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature at Indiana University Bloomington. He earned his PhD in 2006 and a B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1998.
Research Interests: Emery explores intersections of Russian, Balkan, and Scandinavian literature with materialist aesthetics, rhetoric, and literary theory. His work spans science fiction, utopian thought, metafiction, transcription technologies, and the cultural implications of kinship structures. He also engages with aerial photography and panoramic perspectives as both metaphorical and literal frameworks.
Selected Publications: Emery's recent works analyze photography's relationship to labor, Nabokov's rhetorical strategies, Barthes-inspired mythologies, and cybernetic fiction. His edited volume on Svetlana Boym and monograph on alternative kinship models have influenced interdisciplinary approaches to comparative literature.
