Jacob Biel is a faculty member in the Department of English at the University of Chicago, with a cohort year of 2019. His research focuses on 18th-century British literature, Romanticism, and the intersections of law, literature, and social inequality. He coordinates the 18th- and 19th-Century Atlantic Cultures Workshop.

Research Interests: Biel’s work examines the literary origins of concepts like the 'undeserving poor' in philanthropy’s history, linking early novelistic character theories to discourses on humanitarianism, abolitionism, and welfare. He analyzes how literature and legal frameworks shape societal perceptions of criminality, class, gender, and race.
