Jackie Cardwell is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), part of the Pathobiology and Population Sciences department. She holds senior roles including co-Deputy Head of her department and membership in the Hawkshead campus senior tutor team. Her research focuses on equine infectious diseases, One Health principles, and veterinary education innovation.
Education: Graduated from Cambridge University Veterinary School (1994), completed a PhD on equine respiratory disease epidemiology at the Animal Health Trust (2007). Joined RVC's Veterinary Epidemiology, Economics and Public Health (VEEPH) group in 2008.
Research Interests: Combines quantitative/qualitative methods to address animal and human health issues. Key areas include equine respiratory disease (e.g., inflammatory airway disease), zoonotic disease transmission (MERS-CoV, avian influenza), veterinary professional wellbeing, and evidence-based practice adoption in animal healthcare.
Notable Projects: Leads EXPLORE project improving exotic disease preparedness in UK horse populations; co-supervises PhDs on antibiotic usage in dairy farming and MERS-CoV in Jordanian camel-human systems. Active in curriculum development for veterinary leadership training programs.
Awards: Recognized as Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for contributions to veterinary pedagogy.
Advising & Grants: Oversees multiple international collaborations including ZELS-funded Bangladesh avian influenza research and MRC-supported MERS-CoV studies. Supervises 5 current PhD students engaged in diverse epidemiological projects.
Labs/Teams: Core member of VEEPH group conducting interdisciplinary One Health research. Involved in VetCompass Equine Pandemic Project tracking UK equine healthcare trends during COVID-19.
