Dr. Jack Sargeant is a Lecturer in Business History and Heritage at Queen Mary University of London (School of Business and Management, Department of Business and Society). His research focuses on early modern Britain and Europe, exploring the long history of capitalist development, guilds, market regulation, environmental history, and urban geographies. He holds a PhD from University College London and an MA from the University of Amsterdam, with prior roles including Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Manchester.
Research Interests: Histories of capitalism/political economy; guilds and market regulation; environmental history; maritime industry; industrial heritage; social/political history of early modern Britain/Europe. Current projects include studies on maritime industry in early modern Europe and the regulation of the fish trade at Billingsgate Market (17th-18th centuries), involving archival work with City of London Corporation and Fishmongers’ Company records.
Publications include works on early modern trade, English Revolution political dynamics, and legal radicalism. He is a member of the Centre on Labour, Sustainability and Global Production. Public engagement includes historical consulting for Historic Royal Palaces.
