Jack P. Callaghan is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Spine Biomechanics and Injury Prevention at the University of Waterloo, cross-appointed with the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. He serves as Director of the Centre of Research Expertise for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders (CRE-MSD). His research integrates in-vitro tissue mechanics and in-vivo human studies to address low back pain and injury prevention. Key roles include:
- Canada Research Chair in Spine Biomechanics
- Director of CRE-MSD
- Adjunct Professor in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering
Educational background: BPHE (University of Ottawa, 1992), MSc and PhD (University of Waterloo, 1994 and 1999). Awards include Fellow of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics (2014) and Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (2007-present).
Research focuses on spine biomechanics, cumulative injury pathways, and workplace ergonomics. Key projects include studying lumbar spine kinematics, seated postures, and interventions to reduce musculoskeletal disorders. Teaching includes courses like Biomechanical Modelling of Human Movement (KIN 425) and Instrumentation in Biophysical Research (KIN 612).
Grants and collaborations span occupational health, biomechanical engineering, and clinical applications. His lab develops tools for assessing workplace exposures and tissue mechanics.
