Jack Lutz is a Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics at Iowa State University. He serves as Director of the Laboratory for Molecular Programming (LAMP) and is a faculty member in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1987.
His research spans three interconnected areas:
- Algorithmic Dimensions and Randomness: Developing resource-bounded measure theory and algorithmic dimensions to quantify complexity class structures and randomness.
- Molecular Programming: Designing computational models for chemical reaction networks and DNA self-assembly systems.
- Computational Complexity: Investigating fundamental problems including the power of nondeterminism and randomness in computation.
His recent publications focus on extending the point-to-set principle in fractal geometry, developing verification methods for molecular programming, and establishing new results in algorithmic information theory. Work shows strong interdisciplinary connections between computer science, mathematics, and biology.
Honors include selection as an NSF-CBMS Conference Lecturer (2024) for contributions to algorithmic fractal dimensions.
He has supervised over 30 PhD and Master's students, many now holding academic positions worldwide. Research is supported by NSF grants including the CBMS conference grant. He directs the Laboratory for Molecular Programming (LAMP) focusing on theoretical and experimental molecular computation.
