معرفی
Dr. Jack Lawrence is a Senior Research Fellow in Experimental Aeroacoustics within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. He specializes in jet aeroacoustics research with a focus on installed jet noise phenomena and aircraft noise reduction.
Dr. Lawrence completed his Masters of Acoustical Engineering (MEng) degree at the University of Southampton in 2009. After working as an acoustical consultant with Aecom in Sydney, Australia, he returned to Southampton to pursue an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) sponsored by EPSRC, Rolls-Royce, and QinetiQ on installed jet aeroacoustics, which he completed in 2014.
Dr. Lawrence's primary research interests focus on experimental aeroacoustics, particularly installed jet noise phenomena. His work investigates the complex interactions between jet exhaust flows and aircraft structures, with emphasis on understanding the physical mechanisms behind jet-wing interaction noise from high bypass ratio engines. His research employs advanced experimental techniques including wind tunnel testing, hot-wire anemometry, and pressure field measurements to characterize turbulent flows and their acoustic signatures.
Analysis of Dr. Lawrence's recent publications reveals a strong focus on jet aeroacoustics, particularly examining how jet installations affect noise generation. His work spans experimental investigations of turbulence statistics, wall-pressure fluctuations, and the effects of nozzle design on acoustic emissions. A significant portion of his research addresses challenges related to ultra-high bypass ratio engines, which are increasingly important for next-generation aircraft noise reduction.
Dr. Lawrence is actively involved in major research projects including:
- HARMONY (wHole AiRcraft Multidisciplinary nOise desigN sYstem) - a UK TSB funded project where he is designing and commissioning a new wind tunnel for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre's anechoic Doak Laboratory
- JERONIMO (JEt noise of high bypass RatiO eNgines: Installation, advanced Modelling and mitigation) - an EU Framework 7 funded project investigating installed jet-wing interaction noise from ultra high bypass ratio engines (BPR > 12)
Dr. Lawrence currently supervises PhD students including Edoardo Carbini. His research is supported by significant funding from UK and EU sources, including EPSRC, Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, and the European Union's research framework programs.
Dr. Lawrence works within the Acoustics Group and the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton. His experimental work is conducted primarily in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre's anechoic Doak Laboratory, where he is establishing new capabilities for coaxial jet noise research.
