Jacek Splisgart is an Assistant Professor at the University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Languages, Institute of Russian and Eastern Studies, Division of East Asian Culture and Languages. He currently serves as Head of Division and has held academic positions since 2011, including previous roles at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology.
His educational background includes a Doctorate in Ethnology from Adam Mickiewicz University (2005-2010) with dissertation on Japanese annual and family rituals, complemented by visiting scholar studies at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan (2007-2009). He also holds Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Ethnology from the same institution.
Research interests focus on Japanese cultural anthropology, particularly family and annual rituals, cultural change mechanisms, traditional and modern Japanese culture, ethnic identity, and East Asian studies. His work bridges Polish and Japanese anthropological traditions, with emphasis on Yanagita Kunio's folklore studies and contemporary East Asian societies.
Prof. Splisgart has significant administrative experience including creating first and second-cycle study programs in Ethnology, serving as acting head of departments, chairing accreditation report teams for Polish Accreditation Committee, and developing Japanese studies curriculum at University of Gdańsk. He has been instrumental in establishing East Asian Studies programs since 2019.
He is actively involved in scholarly organizations including Polish Association of Japanese Studies, Center for East Asian Studies, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JARC-Net), and International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences.
