Jaap Oosterlaan (born 1962) is a Full Professor in Paediatric Neuropsychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding appointments in the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences (Clinical Neuropsychology), Amsterdam Reproduction & Development, and APH - Mental Health. His primary clinical affiliation is with the Emma Children's Hospital AMC and the Department of Paediatrics at VU Medical Center. Oosterlaan serves on the board of directors of RINO (institute for postgraduate mental health care education for North Netherlands) and is a permanent member of the Dutch Health Council since 2010.
His research program spans two major domains: medical conditions affecting the central nervous system (premature birth, traumatic brain injury) and childhood disruptive behavior disorders (ADHD, antisocial behavior). Oosterlaan employs a comprehensive battery of assessment tools including computer-based paradigms measuring cognitive, motor, and academic functioning, alongside advanced neuroimaging techniques (high density EEG, structural and functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging). His work integrates these measures into the Emma's Toolbox for brain functioning assessment.
Oosterlaan has published over 280 peer-reviewed papers with an h-index of 52 (Web of Science), demonstrating consistent contributions to understanding neural mechanisms underlying developmental disorders. His recent publications show a strong focus on ADHD treatment efficacy, neurodevelopmental outcomes, and genomic influences on brain structure, with multiple high-impact publications in 2024-2025.
As an academic leader, Oosterlaan has supervised 28 PhD theses and collaborates extensively across international research networks. His work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being, particularly through his research on childhood neurological and psychiatric conditions.
