Professor Jaap J Velthuis serves as Professor of Physics at the School of Physics, University of Bristol, and holds a Visiting Professorship at the University of South China since November 2018. His work bridges fundamental particle physics with practical applications in nuclear security and medical physics.
His research centers on radiation detector innovation, including Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) for particle colliders and muon tomography systems for nuclear waste characterization. Key projects involve the LHCb Velo detector at CERN, mu3e experiment at PSI, and H2020 CHANCE project for nuclear waste analysis. His team pioneered real-time dosimetry techniques for radiotherapy and cosmic-ray scanners for detecting shielded nuclear materials.
Velthuis leads 11 projects including active grants like 'NMT: Novel applications of Muon Tomography' and 'EPSRC GLOBAL CHALLENGES 2016', while supervising 6 graduate students. His work demonstrates cross-disciplinary impact from particle physics to civil engineering inspections.
