JHLJ Janssen

Prof. Dr. JHLJ Janssen is a Professor of Violence in Dependent Relationships at Avans University of Applied Sciences. She concurrently serves as Head of Research at the National Expertise Center for Honor-Related Violence (National Police) and holds a Special Professorship in Legal Anthropology at the Open University. A cultural anthropologist by training, her work bridges criminology and societal violence studies.

Research Focus: Janssen's research professionalizes interventions for violence in dependent relationships across three domains:

• Family violence (child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse)
• Institutional/professional violence (healthcare, justice, education, religious contexts)
• Human trafficking (including exploitation in prostitution and ‘loverboy’ scenarios)

Her work emphasizes three research lines:

1. Integrating findings into Avans curricula to train future professionals
2. Life-course analysis of violence for targeted prevention
3. Optimizing interprofessional collaboration and resilience of safety workers

Her inaugural lecture Dependency and Resilience (September 16) formally launched her research group’s work on violence mechanisms in dependent situations.
