J.R. Campbell is a Professor at Kent State University's School of Fashion within the College of the Arts. He earned a B.S. in Environmental Design (1994) and M.F.A. in Textile Arts/Costume Design (1996) from UC Davis, followed by a P.G.Cert. in Ph.D. Supervision from the University of Arts London (2006). His academic roles include leadership in the Design Innovation Initiative and former directorship of The Fashion School. Campbell specializes in digital textile technologies, sustainable design, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, emphasizing maker communities and wicked problem-solving through the Design Innovation Hub.
His research focuses on digital textile imaging, wearable art, and integrating technology into textile design processes. Key awards include the 2010 International Artist of the Year Award from the South Korean Fashion & Culture Association. Campbell’s funded projects span £20,000–£50,000 grants in digital textile innovation and Mackintosh textile research. He pioneered the TechStyleLAB (TSLAB) for experiential learning and co-founded the annual Fashion/Tech Hackathon. His exhibitions, such as 'Awaken' and 'Textile Fusion,' showcase digital textile art globally, with over 80 exhibitions and 20 awards.
