J.C. Casey

J.C. Casey is a Professor of Communication at USAO, affiliated with the Division of Arts and Humanities. Since 1992, they have taught courses in journalism, public speaking, communication research, ethics and legal issues, and broadcasting. Casey advises the student newspaper The Trend and collaborates with students/staff on television shows, documentaries, and public relations campaigns. Prior to USAO, they worked as a media relations and journalism consultant across the eastern U.S., with experience in public relations, TV, radio, magazines, and newspapers.

Research interests focus on interdisciplinary communication practices, media production in educational contexts, and ethics/legal frameworks in journalism. Casey has documented USAO's Independent Study Period through video projects and presented findings to the Association of Interdisciplinary Studies. Their work emphasizes bridging academic theory with practical media applications.

Recipient of the Regents Superior Teacher of the Year award (twice), and former President of the USAO Faculty Association. Leadership roles include service on university and state committees, such as the Chancellor's Faculty Advisory Council.

Advising and grants: Secured grants for USAO's Academic TV Lab and The Trend. Collaborations include working with David Duncan (Video Production Specialist) on documentary projects. Active in grantwriting and student mentorship across media and communication fields.

Labs/Teams: Oversees the Academic TV Lab and advises The Trend student newspaper. Engages in cross-departmental initiatives to integrate media production into academic programs.
