J. Piers Rawling is a Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University, holding the Stilwell Chair and serving as Director of Graduate Studies. His academic career includes over 18 years as department chair (2004–2022) and current administrative roles. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
His research spans ethics, metaethics, decision theory, and philosophy of language, with recent work on moral responsibility and emotions. Notable collaborations include co-editing The Oxford Handbook of Rationality (2004) and The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Philosophy (2018). He is currently editing The Oxford Handbook of Deontology.
Rawling’s interdisciplinary work includes quantum computing research with applied mathematicians and philosophical explorations of logical pluralism. His publications address topics like blameworthiness, moral emotions, and the foundations of decision theory.
