J. Michael Duvall is an Associate Professor at the College of Charleston, where he has been a faculty member since 2005. His expertise lies in the literature and culture of the United States, with a focus on the 19th and early 20th centuries. He teaches courses spanning American realism, regionalism, African American novels, Mark Twain studies, and first-year seminars on race, equity, and inclusion.

Duvall's research explores literary representations of socialism in American fiction, assimilation narratives, and the works of Yan Phou Lee, a pioneering Asian American author. His recent publication analyzes When I Was a Boy in China in the context of Chinese Exclusion and immigrant storytelling.
His teaching portfolio includes undergraduate and graduate courses such as American Renaissance, 19th Century American Literature, and Internship in Teaching Composition. He is based in Room 301, 74 George Street, and holds office hours on Tuesdays.
