J. Lawrence Broz is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He previously held professorships at Harvard University (1993-2000) and New York University (2000-2001). He earned his PhD from UCLA in 1993. Broz serves as Associate Director of the Center for Commerce and Diplomacy at UCSD. His research focuses on the political economy of international trade, finance, and globalization, with recent work examining the impact of trade policies and the WTO on U.S. domestic politics. He has authored influential books, including The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System, and edited volumes such as International Political Economy.
Broz teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on international political economy, globalization, and trade policy. His research spans topics like monetary policy, IMF governance, and the political dynamics of financial crises. His articles frequently analyze the interplay between domestic politics and global economic institutions, with recent publications addressing populism, China’s economic leadership, and the future of multilateralism.
Broz’s work emphasizes the role of institutions in shaping economic outcomes and has been published in leading journals such as International Organization and Economics & Politics. He has also contributed policy analyses on central bank independence and the Federal Reserve’s role in global financial stability.
