Ivor Benjamin

Dr. Ivor Benjamin is a Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, holding appointments in six departments: Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology & Anatomy, and Surgery. He serves as former Director of the Cardiovascular Center and co-leader of the Precision Cardiovascular Medicine program. With training from Johns Hopkins and Yale, his clinical expertise spans general cardiology, inheritable heart failure, and myocardial infarction.

His research focuses on genetic mechanisms of heart disease, including heat shock proteins, oxidative stress pathways, and cardiotoxicological science. Notable contributions include studies on fibrosis mechanisms in post-COVID hearts and molecular cardiology using iPSC-derived models. He leads a $4M Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin initiative and previously held the Christi T. Smith Endowed Chair at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Dr. Benjamin has received prestigious honors such as the NIH Pioneer Award and American Heart Association Merit Award. He currently serves as the American Heart Association’s 82nd president and Circulation editorial board member. His 130+ publications span from foundational cardiovascular science to clinical practice guidelines, with recent work emphasizing pandemic impacts on cardiac health and precision medicine applications.
