Dr. Ivo Utke serves as Group Leader of the Low Dimensional Materials Team at Empa's Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures and concurrently lectures at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) since 2005.
His academic background includes:
- Diploma in Materials Science from Humboldt University, Berlin (1991)
- PhD in Natural Sciences from Humboldt University, Berlin (1995)
Utke's research focuses on synthesizing low-dimensional materials through advanced deposition techniques including atomic layer deposition (ALD), molecular layer deposition (MLD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and gas-assisted focused electron/ion beam processing (FEBIP/FIBIP) for sub-micron 3D nanoprinting. His contributions encompass continuum growth models for high-aspect-ratio structures, novel gas injection systems for pure metal deposition, and a temperature-step ALD process for inert substrates. He has authored over 100 publications, co-edited a seminal book on focused beam nanostructuring, and contributed book chapters on ALD for energy conversion and helium ion microscopy.
Leading Empa's Low Dimensional Materials Team, he drives innovation in thin film technologies, nanocomposites, and materials characterization within the Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures.
